Quinoa Crunch Dog Biscuit Recipe

Have you ever tried quinoa? It’s a nutty-flavored seed that derives from a weed-like plant called Goosefoot (which is closely related to spinach, beets, and chard). This hard-to-pronounce seed (for the record, it’s pronounced KEEN-wah) is packed with all sorts of goodness: protein, fiber, calcium, and the list of beneficial nutrients goes on.

Get this: Not only is quinoa healthy for us humans, but it’s also great for our canine companions! Some puppy parents add a little pre-rinsed and cooked quinoa to their dog’s food. Another way you can sneak a moderate amount into your pup’s diet? Through treats … like these Quinoa Crunch Dog Biscuits!

Quinoa Crunch Biscuits

In this treat recipe, I use quinoa flour (AKA ground up quinoa seeds), coconut flour, and a few other wholesome ingredients that you likely have in your refrigerator right now.

The Ingredients

Quinoa Flour – High in protein, fiber, and a long list of nutrients, quinoa-flour is naturally gluten-free and grain-free. While it’s frequently called a grain (you may have also seen it referred to as an “Ancient Grain” or “Wholegrain”) because it’s often used and cooked like one, quinoa is actually a seed. HERE is the quinoa flour I use!

Coconut Flour – Coconut flour offers fiber, good fat, and protein. HERE is the coconut flour that I use!

Egg – While the egg acts as a binder in this recipe, it also provides vitamin D and other beneficial nutrients.

Pumpkin Puree – Loaded with fiber, pumpkin purée is great for your dog’s digestive health. Just make sure to use 100% pure pumpkin purée and not pumpkin pie filling, which is loaded with not-so-good-for-your-dog spices and sugar!

Coconut Oil – This superfood has antiviral, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties. It’s also been linked to increased nutrient absorption and improved digestion. This stuff is so great, I wrote an entire blog post about it!

A Note On Measuring Flour

When measuring flour, a lot of people have the urge to take their measuring cup, stick it in the flour bag, and scoop. Does that sound familiar? While it may be the easiest way to gather a cup of flour, it won’t leave you with an accurate measurement. Instead, all of my recipes use the traditional “spoon and level” method.

So:

  1. Take a spoon and fluffy up the flour so it is no longer compacted in the bag or canister.
  2. Spoon the flour into a dry measuring cup until it reaches the top.
  3. Use the back of a knife to level off the flour.
  4. Do not compact it, tap it, or press it down. Just leave it fluffy.

Quinoa Crunch Dog Biscuit Recipe

Ingredients

  • cups quinoa flour
  • ½ cup coconut flour
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325ºF. Line one or two baking sheets (depending on the size) with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients.
  • Add wet ingredients and mix everything together with a spoon or fork.
  • Using your hands, knead dough for several minutes, eventually forming a dough ball. The dough will feel dry at first, just keep folding and kneading until you're left with a Play-doh-like consistency.
  • Sandwich doughball in between two pieces of parchment paper.
  • With a rolling pin, roll dough to about 1/4" thick. Stamp with cookie cutters and place biscuits on the baking sheet.
  • Bake for 25 minutes. Once the timer goes off, flip treats over and bake another 5 minutes.
  • Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Notes

  • Store treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
