RECALL ALERT: Hill’s Pet Nutrition Expands Dog Food Recall
Hill’s Pet Nutrition is expanding its voluntary recall of canned dog foods due to potentially elevated vitamin D levels.
Earlier this year, Proud Dog Mom reported that Hill’s found out about the potential for elevated vitamin D levels after receiving a complaint in the United States. That’s when they heard about a dog experiencing symptoms. An investigation confirmed elevated levels of vitamin D due to a supplier error.
Now, Hill’s released a statement saying:
“Following that recall, we conducted a detailed review of all canned dog foods potentially impacted by the vitamin premix with elevated levels of vitamin D. This review included: analyzing consumer complaints; reviewing veterinarian medical consultations; auditing our supplier; and reviewing our own manufacturing and quality procedures. We then did additional product testing to ensure we had taken all appropriate action. Our review determined that there were additional products affected by that vitamin premix, and it is for that reason that we are expanding the recall. Hill’s has received a limited number of complaints of pet illness related to some of these products.”
What’s Recalled
You’ll want to be on the lookout for both Hill’s Prescription Diet and Hill’s Science Diet. Items marked in blue are new SKUs that were added to the list on March 20, 2019.
In the United States, the recalled canned dog foods were distributed through retail pet stores and veterinary clinics. It’s important to note that no dry foods, cat foods, or pet treats are affected.
About Elevated Vitamin D
According to a recall notice by the FDA:
“While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, and dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.”
If you’ve fed the recalled food to your dog and he’s experiencing the above symptoms then schedule a vet visit ASAP.
