In April 2021, a fluffy gray cat streaked across Denver’s Coors Field the night the Colorado Rockies met the Los Angeles Dodgers in an MLB matchup. And while this fluffy streaker captured attention and commanded headlines, behind the scenes, a kitten was finding his way into the world somewhere in the depths of the ballpark. But no one would meet the black and white kitten until his mom, Socks the Coors Field Cat , began showing him the lay of their ballpark land after deeming the humans okay. It was then Junior caught Jenni Leigh’s attention. As a cat foster and TNR advocate, Jenni volunteers with the Animal Rescue of the Rockies and cares for the cats that roam the ballpark and its surrounding area. She was inspired to get the park cats fixed after watching the gray cat run Coors Field during that April 2021 game. More commonly known as New Zealand, Aotearoa is home to more than 1.4 million cats. That means forty percent of families there have at least one feline. The Guardian reports the country boasts one of the highest cat ownership rates in the world. As for the feral cat population, they number in the millions. And conservationists see this as a problem. In trying to conserve native bird populations, New Zealand’s government started an initiative known as Predator Free 2050 . The plan has been in action since 2016, labeling stoats, ferrets, weasels, rats, and possums as pests that should be eliminated from the ecosystem of the island as they are introduced predators responsible for decimating native animal populations. Now, the feathers are flying between cat lovers and conservationists as certain groups are pushing to add cats to the list of pests in New Zealand. Amazon delivery drivers do more than make customers happy by delivering their packages. They’re also heroes to cats in need! And thanks to a kind-hearted Amazon delivery driver, a young black cat can count herself lucky after being tossed from a moving car window onto a busy roadway. At the intersection of Franklin Avenue and 46th Street in Des Moines, Iowa, the anonymous driver witnessed a person in the car ahead of him throw the kitten out of the vehicle. He immediately pulled over to save the day. Seeing the driver offered safety, the kitten ran into his arms. The driver then delivered the little one to Iowa Pet Foods and Seascapes in West Des Moines, where store owner Lori Sandahl welcomed her with open arms.
