9-Year-Old Runs Annual Lemonade Stand To Fund His Local Animal Shelter

Image
After spending an entire spring day creating and selling sweet lemonade, you may expect a third-grader to want to buy themself a toy or splurge on a special dessert. Not every nine-year-old would want to donate their hard-earned efforts to a local animal shelter. But that’s the exact reason that Ben Miller was inspired to start his annual lemonade stand in the first place. Facebook This decision came easily for Ben. He started his lemonade to help make life a little happier for the rescue cats at his local animal shelter and get the eldest, long-time residents adopted. Ben was inspired to begin his fundraising efforts three years ago after he and his grandmother visited the Idaho Humane Society .  Facebook Being an avid animal lover, Ben noticed that some of the rescue cats didn’t have any toys. So he decided to step in and lend a helping hand. At just seven years old, Ben set up his first stand and sold his first cups of lemonade. He was happy to help and proud to have r...

CattyCorner: The Origins Behind Your Favorite Cat-Related Phrases & Idioms

Image
Greetings, my pawsome human minions. It is I, Forrest Wisewhiskers, here again to impart feline knowledge upon your curious minds. And today, I feel the need to discuss cat idioms. “Why,” you ask? As usual, my parents’ silliness has inspired my post, this one because they think it’s funny to comment, “Look what the cat dragged in,” when I haul my favorite bird toy around the house. (A quick side note about the bird: it looks much like my mockingbird nemesis, so I like to carry it around as a soother after I’ve seen said bird outside.) The parents’ comments got me thinking about how the way of cats is so excellent, we’ve inspired humans in their writing endeavors since you people started doing such things. So, it’s no surprise there are so many cat-related phrases peppering human language. And it’s times like these my curiosity comes in handy because, in my infinite feline wisdom, I can tell you the origins behind many of these cat idioms. Are you ready to be amazed by the power o...

Alexei Surovtsev is well-known in Ukraine. As an actor, striptease champion, and performer on his country’s version of Dancing With The Stars , he has amassed many fans. But Surovtsev’s greatest role to date is that of hero. His efforts to save stranded pets from the warzones of his hometown have earned him the nickname “Cat Saviour of Irpin.” However, “Pet Savior” is a more accurate title as Surovtsev also rescues dogs and any other creature in need. One of his Instagram videos shows a pair of chinchillas he helped extract from the city’s wreckage. Instagram The buff animal lover makes frequent missions into Irpin’s most dangerous areas, emerging with “20 to 30 tails” per day, most of them left behind by their fleeing owners. Some are reunited with their original families or given to friends to be transported to other cities and countries. Social media updates also show Surovtsev caring for many animals in his own home, providing food, water, and lots of TLC. Others are taken ...

Rescued Bengal Cat Needs Help Funding Her Life-Saving Cancer Surgery

Image
Bengal cat Rose is only four-years-old, but she’s already known a lifetime of pain and sickness. Luckily, this “beautiful soul” also knows love and support thanks to the RSPCA Isle of Thanet branch. Rose came to RSPCA Thanet just a couple of months ago as a stray who’d once been used for breeding. And she arrived with a concerning lump on her leg. Biopsies revealed the lump to be a soft tissue sarcoma. The malignant tumor’s complicated location left vets with no choice but amputation of the leg. Now, this sweet lady cat has received even more bad news and needs your help. Facebook More Cancer Found Emily Mayer, branch manager at RSPCA Thanet, describes Rose as “a beautiful soul who sadly arrived with a large lump on her right hind limb.” “We quickly had biopsies of the lump which heartbreakingly have shown it is soft tissue sarcoma, a nasty form of cancer.” Facebook “As this is around her muscle and due to its size, the vets decided the only option was to amputate her l...
