RECALL: Two Separate Food Recalls Issued From Different Companies Over Aflatoxin & Plastic Pieces

Image
Two recalls have been issued for dog and cat food products from two different companies. These recalls have been issued for separate reasons. First, Sunshine Mills, Inc . has issued a voluntary recall of certain dog food products due to the potential for elevated levels of Aflatoxin, a naturally occurring by-product resulting from the growth of Aspergillus flavus, a corn mold which can be harmful to animals when consumed in significant quantities. Earlier this year, Sunshine Mills issued food recalls over Aflatoxin contamination after the death of 70 dogs. It is important to note in this recall of six Sunshine Mills food brands, there have been no illnesses reported. The recall is voluntary and meant to ensure the safety of their customers. Secondly, earlier in the month, 3 oz. cans of Purina Pro Plan Complete Essentials Tuna Entrée in Sauce Wet Cat Food were recalled over fears they may contain pieces of plastic. Marlin The Cat Speaks Meow & Loves To Fish, But Still Thinks He’s A Dog

Image
When you’re the youngest kid in a pack of four, you want to be just like your older siblings. But what if you’re a cat and your big brothers and sisters are dogs? Then your name might be Marlin and you might love a good swim in the salty sea with the doggos! Marlin is the cutest white and orange tabby cat, but ever since coming home as a kitten, he’s studied everything dogs Buxton, Hattie, Shady, and Buoy have done. And though a cat, Marlin loves life on the water just like his furry family members. Living in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his parents and the pups, Marlin and the whole herd enjoy swimming, fishing, cruising in the boat, and simply being near the water. @carolinejarvis/ Instagram Marlin the Catdog Marlin meows, preens his ears, and tidies his whiskers like any fine feline should, but as he’ll tell you about himself, “I’m a cat, raised by dogs…and I think I’m a dog.” @carolinejarvis/ Instagram “Basically I’m a catdog,” explained Marlin. @carolinej...

Sinbad The Survivor Cat & The Five Pounds Of Matted Fur

Image
Sinbad the Survivor voyaged from the land of neglect and matted fur to the paradise of a forever home with a dad he’s happy to call his best friend. Sinbad’s journey from neglect began when a utility worker spotted a cat who looked as if he were “dragging a carpet” in the basement of an elderly man’s Illinois home. He contacted The Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago to get help for the cat. When an investigator arrived, the situation became clear right away. As cat dad Elliot Serrano explained on Sinbad’s Instagram page , the elderly man Sinbad lived with couldn’t take care of himself, nor could he care for Sinbad, leaving the poor Persian cat in a sad state of matted fur and debris. Fortunately, the man realized Sinbad needed help he couldn’t give, so he surrendered the 9-year-old cat to the Society, where his voyage to “rescue and rehabilitation” set sail. @sinbadthesurvivor/ Instagram Discovering the Riches of Love Along the Way Clearly, Sinbad hadn’t been groomed in a long whi...

Natural and Dietary Solutions for Dogs to Reduce Flea & Tick Problems

Image
Vet Recommended: Tips on the best ways to prevent fleas and ticks on dogs Summer typically brings lots of fun and outdoor adventures, which most of us look forward to, but with it comes a higher abundance of pesky insects and parasites that may impact the wellbeing of our pets.   We try to avoid using toxins in/on our pets (and in our own environments), but in some cases, we may need to choose our battles based on how difficult the flea/tick problem is to tackle. Fortunately, in many geographical regions, the use of pharmaceutical flea and tick products can be avoided through much of the year and minimized to only a few times of use during the summer season. Found Paralyzed With Fly Larva In His Eye, Raylan The Cat Thanks You For Giving Him A Chance

Image
When the HOPE Spay Neuter Clinic of Versailles, Kentucky received a call about a paralyzed kitten with a ruptured eye at a rural feral cat colony, president DeeDee Lloyd said, “Bring him to me.” The kitten in question, Raylan, was in a bad way and taken immediately for medical care, and there, the vet discovered it wasn’t a rupture of the eye they were dealing with, but instead, as DeeDee explained, “He had a Cuterebra larvae in his eye socket.” But the eye larvae, or warble as they’re sometimes called, wasn’t the only issue. This poor kitten had an old injury to his lower back, “possibly from being thrown out of a car or by someone kicking him.” Though the injury left his back legs paralyzed, the vet assured DeeDee the sweet kitten felt no pain. And when it came to the Cuterebra invasion, eventually, Raylan’s eye should move back to its proper place with the nasty larva gone.
